Maryland Society of Surveyors Honors Members for Service to the Surveying Profession

 The Maryland Society of Surveyors (MSS) is pleased to announce members who were honored in 2016 for professionalism, dedication and outstanding contributions to the organization. Award winners include:

 
  • Chapter of the Year - Baltimore Chapter
  • Young Surveyor of the Year - Jeremy Burns, Rodgers Consulting, Inc.
  • Draper and Dottie Sutcliffe Scholarship - Jeremy McCombs, Bryant Associates, Inc.
  • Fred and Joan Ward Scholarship - William Everett, Extreme Measures Land Surveyors
  • Presidential Recognition - Kevin Miller and David Comer, Macris, Hendricks and Glascock P.A.
  • Friend of the Society - John DiCarlo, DiCarlo Precision Instrument, Inc.
  • Russell E. Lowman Award - Mike Davis, Dewberry
Additionally, a Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Lowell L.Chapman. Mr. Chapman, a lifelong resident of Midlothian, MD, received a BS and MS in Education from Frostburg State and a BS in Civil Engineering from West Virginia University. He has owned and operated Lowell Chapman Surveying & Engineering for over 50 years, where he works as both as a professional land surveyor and professional engineer, serving clients in Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Mr. Chapman has not only served his local community for many years, but as a longtime member of MSS, has served the surveying profession as well.

2016 MSS President, TJ Frazier, Van Mar Associates, Inc. was also recognized, and awarded the traditional president's gavel, for his year of service to the organization.
In addition to recognition awards, two competitions - plat and photo - were also held and voted on by the membership.
 
The Plat awards celebrate exemplary professionalism in technical presentation. The entries are judged on compliance to standards, originality, and overall appearance. The winners for 2016 are:

The photo contest seeks to showcase the surveying profession in the field. All photos show the products and services provided and performed by professional surveyors, and show the wide array of activities and locations surveyors encounter. The winner of the 2016 Surveying in Action photo contest is:
 
"Wilson's Inheritance" by Ed Mackley, VanMar Associates, Inc.
 
The awards were presented at a banquet during the MSS 50th Annual Fall Conference & Exhibition held October 27-19 in Solomons, MD.
