The Maryland Society of Surveyors is honored to announce the publication of the latest edition of Statutory Laws of Maryland Relating to Land Surveyors. This book is a compilation of Maryland statutes and rules that relate to the surveying profession. First published in 1982, with several subsequent updates and supplements, and different cover colors, the newest edition, the “Black Book”, is a collection of the latest major statutes and rules that will serve as a convenient starting point and a reference work for land surveyors of the State of Maryland and to anyone interested in the legal aspects of the practice of land surveying.  This compilation of selected laws is fully up to date with statutes enacted through the 2017 Regular Session of the Maryland General Assembly.

Edited by James J. Demma, an attorney and a Maryland Professional Land Surveyor, the book is a collection of statutory law, as enacted by the State Legislature, but not "case law", which is the body of law derived from the decided cases by various courts, including the Maryland Court of Appeals and the Court of Special Appeals; the United States District Court, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. That volume, The Law of Land Boundaries for the Maryland Surveyors and Related Materials: Cases and Commentary, also known as the “Brown Book” will have a supplement published later this year.

At the MSS Spring Technical Conference, Mr. Demma will lead a class that will feature his expert analysis and insight on the laws and cases, as well as their relevancy to and impact on the practice of surveying in Maryland.

Copies of Statutory Laws of Maryland Relating to Land Surveyors are available for purchase (member price - $135) from MSS via the society’s website.  On the book order form, please indicate whether the book should be shipped to you, or if you wish to picked up your copy at the Spring Conference.  If it is shipped, MSS cannot guarantee delivery prior to the Spring Conference.  The non-member price is $250.
