James M. Shaw, Jr., Prof.L.S. is Project Manager - Surveys & Mapping in the Hunt Valley office of Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, Inc.and a past president of MSS.

My path to this career was indirect. For reasons unknown, even to me, when asked in eighth grade what I wanted to pursue as a career, I replied, “I like maps.” This response landed me with an application and acceptance into the drafting program at Eastern Vocational Technical High School in Baltimore.

MARCH 17-23, 2019



     
National Surveyors Week is March 17-23, 2019, and Global Surveyors Day falls within that week on Thursday, March 21. NSPS has submitted a request to the White House; for recognition from President Trump. Our Executive Director is seeking a proclamation declaring the observance of Surveyors Week in Maryland from Governor Hogan, and individual surveyors, their firm or agencies, and chapters are urged to mark the observance as well.

Maryland's Next Bridge Across
the Chesapeake Bay


     

 A new bridge over the Chesapeake Bay could begin on the Western Shore anywhere between Harford County and St. Mary’s County, according to maps of potential new bridges created by the Maryland Transportation Authority and the Federal Highway Administration.

  State Plane Coordinate Webinar - March 7, 2019

NGS will establish the State Plane Coordinate System of 2022 (SPCS2022) as part of modernizing the National Spatial Reference System. NGS invited written comments on the draft SPCS2022 policy and procedures. In this webinar, we will share the feedback it received on SPCS2022 and the final SPCS2022 Policy and Procedures.

Membership

     
The new membership year has begun. If you have not renewed your dues, please do so as soon as possible. Renewal invoices were emailed in early August and three subsequent email reminders were sent prior to the September 30, 2018 expiration date and paper copies where mailed on November 16, 2018. According to the MSS by-laws if dues are not paid within 90 days (December 31, 2018) of the date payable October 1, 2018, a member shall forfeit his or her membership in the society and their account will be suspended. In order to continue taking advantage of the benefits you receive as a member of MSS, such as member discounts at all upcoming events, including meetings, conferences, and education programs, please submit your payment by logging into your account at www.marylandsurveyor.org or send a check to our office at 10340 Democracy Lane, Suite 300, Fairfax, VA 22030 or calling the office at 1-800-303-6770 and MSS staff will help you access your profile or assist you in processing a payment via credit card.
