MSS.  Santa, thanks for sitting down with us.

Santa.  Ho, Ho Ho.  It is my pleasure.  Surveyors are such good girls and boys.

MSS. How has your Christmas Eve journey changed over the years?

Santa.  Three letters: G.P.S.  Can you imagine how difficult navigation was in the old days?  Have you ever tried Celestial Observation in the snow?  GPS is a game changer. I now know my position with great precision, anywhere in the world.

MSS. So you use new technology?

Santa.  Use it?  Heaven's yes.  I don't just give it out as gifts.  Not only do I use G.P.S. for navigation, but I fully employ GIS.  I have a geo-enabled database, with attributes that includes address, time zone, the individual's Christmas wish list, and, of course,  data on whether they've been naughty or nice!

MSS.  What about all this concern about geolocation data and individual citizen privacy?

Santa. Bah Humbug!  Sorry, about that.  First and foremost,  All my data is very secure and  I don't share it with anyone. And, I comply with the NSPS-endorsed guideline on Best Practices on Privacy of Geospatial Data. And I live in the North Pole, so I'm a citizen of the world, not a U.S. citizen. I don't have to comply with pesky regulations, including the Freedom of Information Act.

MSS.  What about the future?

Santa.  I'm intrigued about these unamanned aircraft systems.  They may help me, but they may also put me out of a job.  Right now, the regulations won't let me fly at night, fly over people, or fly beyond visual line of sight.  And I don't know if the FAA has ruled on whether reindeer fall within the definition of "unmanned".  But in the future, who knows?

MSS.  Thanks for your time.  We know this is a very busy time of the year.  Any final words for MSS members?

Santa.  Merry Christmas to all and to all, a good night.
