Unique Legal & Cultural Aspects of Pipeline Surveys

This webinar discusses the unique legal and cultural realities of pipeline surveys and their impact on a growing pipeline infrastructure industry skills gap. As the United States becomes more adept at managing the domestic and global markets for natural gas, efforts to transport this raw material to cracker plants, CNG export facilities, and natural gas power plants and manufacturing facilities grows. These efforts require pipelines and pipelines require surveys before, during, and after construction. Unlike static boundary surveys, however, pipeline surveys are dynamic, crossing hundreds if not thousands of properties, varied topographies, and countless rights of way, easements, and even wildlife migratory patterns. Additionally, unlike boundary surveys, pipeline surveys are heavily regulated. Like any survey, a pipeline survey can be completed by simply recording data. However, an impactful survey, one that is meaningful to land-owners and importantly to pipeline owner/operators, requires much more than “taking a shots,” recording data, or even masterfully operating advanced technologies. This webinar will help surveyors understand the cultural and legal realities of dynamic and regulated pipeline surveys so the profession can keep up with national and international demands.  The APPS Pipeline Surveyor Certification program and requirements will also be presented and discussed.

Ethics in Business

Just as personal ethics serve as the foundation for an individual’s reputation, so goes the same for a firm's reputation. Solid business ethics are essential for the long-term success of any organization. In fact, a firm’s ethics or lack thereof will have a profound influence on all who interact with the company including its clients/customers, employees, suppliers, competitors, and the communities they serve. Accordingly, understanding the ethical obligations of a firm at the business level is an important if not critical component to the future success of the firm. This session is designed to provide thought-provoking subject material on ethics in business environments.

GEOIDs: An Elevated Survey

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Geodetic Survey (NGS) has a long history of producing geoid models for use with the National Spatial Reference System. For the past few years, NGS has been creating two types of geoid models: Hybrid Geoids and Gravimetric Geoids.

This webinar will provide a brief overview of why NGS has this dual-model framework, how each type of model is created focusing on differences, the various related datasets and models available with these geoids, and address typical misconceptions about these models. Most importantly, a brief look at the performance and quality of the most recent models will be presented with information about how users can best use these models for determining elevations.
