Bathymetry is the science of data collection of the depths and shapes of underwater terrain, including the floor of oceans, harbors, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water. It is the sub-marine equivalent of topography. Bathymetric data is used for charting, as well as engineering projects that involve bodies of water. This webinar will show how to use bathymetric data with land based topographic data on projects addressing shoreline erosion, marsh area protection, and other features of a living shoreline.

Washington, DC’s complex urban environment includes numerous geographies to identify Federal government lands, reservations, District lands, personal property, and much more. In 2022 the American Society of Civil Engineers published a digital data standard for recording utility infrastructure: Standard Guideline for Recording and Exchanging Utility Infrastructure Data, ASCE/CI/UESI 75-22 (ASCE 75).  This standard serves two needs: 1) provides a common basis for documenting a wide variety of typical utility infrastructure in 3D with standardized domain lists (i.e., pick menus) for feature attributes and spatial accuracy criteria sufficient to generate an accurately georeferenced and geometrically correct digital twins; and 2) provides the framework for establishing schemas and data dictionaries that facilitate utility infrastructure data exchange.  ASCE 75 can serve as an “as-built” standard for newly installed and exposed utility infrastructure.  The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has already adopted ASCE 75 for their new data integration standard (Model for Underground Data Definition and Integration) which will lead to seamless data exchange between CADD, GIS, BIM, augmented reality, and other emerging 3D visualization and data management applications.

Phil Meis, P.E., M.ASCE, Governor for ASCE’s Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute, and Chair of the ASCE 75 standard, will provide an overview of the standard and what it means to the surveying community.
