Speaking Out for Your Interests in Annapolis
It has often been said that one of the most valuable services any association can offer its members is a strong government affairs program. One that closely monitors legislative and regulatory issues that may affect your business or profession. To be successful in achieving these goals, an organization must have a strong presence among legislators; have credibility, and be able to identify issues that are relevant to your profession.
Legislators have often told us how impressed they are about the depth of our "grassroots" efforts. When we were working on the Statute of Repose, many expressed that they had received more calls, emails, and letters from our members on this topic than any other piece of legislation! Very impressive, indeed.
Our goal is to be able to inform the MSS membership on issues that are important to and impact the profession. Our grassroots advocacy is successful because MSS effectively targets legislators on the issues that impact the profession.
The MSS Government Affairs Committee is chaired by Bill Bower who works closely with our legislative agent, William Kress, Esq. The Committee welcomes input from MSS members.
The Maryland Society of Surveyors Survey Political Action Committee (Survey PAC) is the legal, ethical and professional way for membership organizations, such as MSS, to engage in our great political process.
How the PAC Works
The Survey PAC is a separate, segregated political fund that accepts voluntary, contributions from firms and individuals. The PAC uses those funds to support the campaigns of candidates for State office who support the surveying community.
An individual or corporation may contribute up to $6,000 per four (4) year gubernatorial cycle to the MSS PAC, according to Maryland election law. Personal, individual, or corporate contributions of any amount up to the limit are encouraged. A contribution of $10, $25, $50, $200 or more helps support the surveying profession.
By law, MSS resources for political purposes are limited. That is where the Survey PAC comes in. MSS must rely on the generous, voluntary, personal contributions of individuals, or corporate contributions from firms. Please contribute to the Survey PAC today.
Contributions to the MSS PAC are not deductible as charitable donations on Federal income tax returns.
