Surveyor of the Year
The Surveyor of the Year award was first created in 1969 to honor the most outstanding surveyor for the year. The award usually honors a surveyor licensed in Maryland* who has contributed the most and been dedicated to the surveying profession for that calendar year.
Russell E. Lowman Award
In 2002 the Trustees of the Maryland Society of Surveyors Educational Trust resolved to present an award each year to that special individual in our Society who best embodies the spirit of education – and that person in MSS who did truly best embody that spirit was Russ Lowman.
Chapter of the Year Award
This award was created in 2010 and is given to the chapter that supports the surveying profession and the MSS. Some of the factors include an active chapter, and the chair should be active with society, public relations, legislation, workforce development, or other programs and activities.
Lifetime Achievement Award
This award is given to the person who most emulates the goals of MSS, and in general, the profession of land surveying – that person who has maintained the ideals of MSS with respect to training and educating younger members, promoting the ethics of our society and the profession, who has worked tirelessly at his/her profession – who has sought out education as a goal of improving himself/herself as a professional; and who has achieved these goals during their lifetime.
Friend of the Society Award
This award is given in recognition of an individual for outstanding support for the surveying profession. The recipient can be a regular member, but also to recognize the vendors that support the society, or other individuals.
Technician of the Year Award
This award was created in 2024 and is given to individuals based on their contributions to the profession in Maryland. The recipient selected for this award has to be an active member of Maryland Society of Surveyors.

Recipients of the
Russell E. Lowman Award
Russ Lowman was always at the forefront of the educational pursuits in our Society. Russ taught, counseled and advised so many of us in all aspects of land surveying. He was looked-up to by the members of our profession as a trusted and representative friend for all land surveyors. Russ was always looking for the right answer to the many problems which crossed his desk, and he so often prudently sought advice from others on the many legal and surveying issues which he, and on behalf of other members of our Society required. Russ conducted many seminars and lectures, always adding his vast experience, knowledge and yes - wisdom to the subject which was being presented. Russ was greatly respected by all of the members of our profession, and by the many lawyers with whom he came in contact, and for all these reasons, and for many more, this award was named in his honor.
